My name is Silvana Ruella de Oliveira and I’m a Postdoc researcher at BAM's Inorganic Trace Analysis Division. I’m an analytical chemist coming from Brazil and my research at BAM is focused on the development of ICP-MS methods for multielement determination in single cells.

Since I was a child, I have always been fascinated by science and how things work. I grew up on a little farm in a developing country, and initially, I needed to overcome additional challenges to become a female scientist, e.g., as a child, I traveled every day from the countryside to the nearest city to go to school. As a woman, it was expected from me to follow a traditional professional career for females. However, my dreams were different. Fortunately, I always had support from my parents.

Consequently, I am the first person with a Ph.D. degree in my whole family, and I hope my journey can be an example for other girls in all developing countries. Additionally, besides research, since 2014 I have a full-time job as a mother, so, the amazing world of science must start early in the morning every day at home, where I want to inspire my daughter to realize the beauty and the challenges regarding science, and, also, to show her the ways to overcome future barriers for women in different careers. In fact, thanks to the first female scientists, today, women in science are more common, but it is not a simple nor an easy task. A consistent network of female scientists is still required and can be the key to increasing the number of women in science and in leadership positions.

My tip for girls and women interested in science: never give up and be courageous!

“Women have a place at the table when it comes to science. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”
Marye Anne Payne Fox (American physical organic chemist and university administrator. She was the first female chief executive of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina).
