Our key areas
Burst sheet test
Risk is a function of the damage of an unwanted event and the probability with which it will occur. In our key area "Safe handling of dangerous materials and dangerous goods" we are concerned with controlling risks inherent in the transportation, storage and handling of explosive, flammable and other dangerous materials and material systems.
Explosion-pressure resistant test tank
The materials researchers and chemists at BAM determine and evaluate the dangerous characteristics of materials, material mixtures and goods. Based on this they look at what technologies are suitable for reducing risk. Often this starts in the factory: how can highly complex chemical processes and plant technology be upgraded? How can containment safety be improved so that substances stored are well protected? What is important in transport, storage and disposal? BAM performs important work in these areas, e.g. improving the safety of radioactive substances transport.

The work done at BAM also greatly contributes to prevention: the risk of abuse is intrinsic to the general use of dangerous materials – terrorist attacks are an example. Aspects of prevention include testing and developing technical solutions for detecting explosives, or examining the effects of explosions on building façades.
