Asphaltic plug joints

The section of roadway between the normal carriageway and the road surface of a bridge or tunnel is called a ‘roadway transition’ or 'asphaltic plug joints' by engineers. Steel is normally used for these transitions but since the 1980s, asphalt has also been used. The cost of maintaining and cleaning asphalt transitions is low and travel comfort is relatively high. BAM has developed suitable test criteria and methodologies for quality assuring such transitions. A new set of rules has been established based on the findings which now forms the basis for the approval of asphalt roadway transitions.

Testing of reinforced concrete

Reinforced concrete is the most frequently used building material for load-bearing components in buildings and bridges. The mix of steel bars and concrete is capable of carrying high loads and can be shaped easily. BAM possesses special test equipment in which plates and girders from reinforced concrete can be tested using both static and dynamic loads. The test results indicate that materials can be used more economically while maintaining the same level of safety.

IBCs on fire

IBC is short for Intermediate Bulk Containers. The most common IBCs consist of a palette, a plastic tank with a maximum volume of 3000 litres and a simple pipe grid frame. If dangerous goods are transported in it, the IBC must be certified. BAM is the relevant authority for the approval within Germany. An approval contains safety engineering tests, e.g. fire tests, and these tests must prove that the container is suitable for dangerous goods transport.

Biodegradable plastics

Recycling decreases the disposal problem of plastic waste, however this gives rise to additional costs. It would be ideal if plastic products could become part of a biological material cycle where the products could be decomposed by microorganisms into their basic components. BAM has made a major contribution to the development of a standardised method for testing the biological degradability of plastics. Nowadays products of compostable plastic are available in shops.

Fire engineering

As a recognised test laboratory, BAM investigates the behaviour of building materials and components in a fire. It provides advice to the Federal Government on issues of fire protection in the field of legislation and standardisation. BAM is a service provider for industry, federations, authorities and private individuals and performs research in the field of preventive fire protection for example.

Hydrogen energy - clean and safe

The fossil fuels coal, oil and natural gas will be exhausted in foreseeable future. Also because of the high CO2 contamination which develops through the combustion of carbon-containing substances, conversion of our energy industry will be necessary. As a replacement, hydrogen is being considered. It can be obtained in large quantities and is a clean source of energy, but is its application safe?
