Technology plays a major role in making our lives easier. In many ways, technology forms the basis of the economy and industry. It may, however, involve a certain amount of risk. Such risks have to be identified and contained.
The Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing BAM is responsible for working towards safety in technology and chemistry. It is making a significant contribution to recognising the dangers inherent in technology and keeping risks at a minimum. In its three locations in Berlin BAM has a large number of various laboratories. For experiments of high danger potential, however, BAM uses a test site comprising twelve square kilometres of land situated fifty kilometres from Berlin.
Here, the BAM Test Site Technical Safety, or BAM TTS for short, has been built during the past years. About twenty-five million Euros were invested in new, and, in part, unique test facilities. As a result, BAM has obtained a test site which is exceptional in Europe.
There are several separate test areas to be used by chemists, physicists, engineers and biologists. They work on developing and improving experimental procedures and legal directives aimed at ensuring the safe handling of hazardous materials, chemicals and technical equipment. The experiments comprise fire and explosion tests, mechanical fatique tests and long-term studies.
With its large variety and diversity of test facilities the BAM Test Site Technical Safety is unique in Europe. The interdisciplinary research of the different departments results in the continuous elaboration of methods to ensure technical safety.
