Reconditioners symbols

As proof of the reconditioners qualification by a BAM recognizes quality assurance programme (QAP) for the reconditioning of packagings for the transport of dangerous goods BAM specifies a symbol in co-ordination with these companies, which has to be included in the mandatory additional marking.

Reconditioning covers the following activities on packagings:

a) for a metal drum:

(i) complete internal and external cleaning and

(ii) restoring to original shape and contour, replacing of all non-integral gaskets and

(iii) check that packaging is free of defects after cleaning but before painting – rejection of defective packagings

b) for a plastics drum or a plastics jerrican:

(i) complete internal and external cleaning and

(ii) replacing of all non-integral gaskets and

(iii) check that packaging is free of defects after cleaning – rejection of defective packagings

(non-integral parts of a packaging are components which can be replaced without damaging the packaging, exchange of glued-in or foamed cover gaskets is allowed for instance)

Notes:

• each packaging intended to contain liquids, shall succesfully undergo a suitable leakproofness test after reconditioning (not necessary for inner packagings of combination packagings, inner receptacles of composite packagings (glass, porcelain or stoneware) marked with the symbol "RID/ADR" and light gauge metal packagings marked with the symbol "RID/ADR")
• the maximum allowable period of use has to be taken into consideration particularly for plastic packagings
• reconditioned packagings must be free of defects affecting the ability to withstand the design type tests
• fully embossed drums may be reconditioned if the reconditioners symbol is applied in permanent form
