The test area for investigating hazards from fire and explosions on the BAM Test Site Technical Safety

The test area is used for investigating hazards from fire and explosions in flammable substances and systems. Test devices can be utilized for investigating

• materials and fittings submerged in high-pressure oxygen,
• fire risk from facilities, plant components and materials in compressed oxygen,
• swirled-up combustible dust of a controlled consistency and in movement,
• explosions in heterogeneous and homogeneous substance systems
• and pressure relief in gas and dust explosions.

Safety parameters of systems containing chemical substances and their reaction behaviour in normal use in the appropriate container, pipe section or safety equipment can be determined. Devices such as pressure relief devices, flame guards and decoupling systems can be tested. The strength of metallic components and the efficiency of flame arresters can be investigated under load from an explosion. For this purpose, variable, modular test devices are available. Their dimensions are larger than those in the laboratories at BAM’s Headquarters, so that safety problems can also be investigated at an industrial scale. The results are integrated into European standards and standardized test methods and serve for the safety assessment of chemical facilities.
