BAM Test Site Technical Safety

Fire wall facility

The fire wall facility consists of two fire test grounds (14 m x 14 m), both surrounded on three sides by earth bunds. Behind the two fire test grounds there is a further test ground for ignition and reaction behaviour tests of explosive materials and objects.

The fire tests are carried out in steel tubs to avoid soil contamination. There is an additional protective foil under the fire wall facility so that potential contamination outside of the steel tubs can be collected in two special storage tanks.

BAM is the competent authority for dangerous goods classification of various materials and objects. They include explosives, objects containing explosives, organic peroxides, self-decomposing materials and ammonium nitrate emulsions. The relevant UN test handbook requires various fire tests to be performed to allocate classes of danger. Depending upon the test result, a class and a UN number are then assigned to the dangerous goods inclusive of its packing. Further investigations are carried out according to explosion regulations, in particular on storage.
