BAM Test Site Technical Safety

Observation bunker

The observation bunker is the protected area for staff to observe tests. It is designed and built in such a way that it withstands a explosive effect of 150 kg of TNT equivalent.

People inside the bunker are thus protected at all times from the dangerous effects arising from the tests (pressure surge, ejected fragments and shrapnel, radiant heat etc.). It is located to provide a good view over the entire area.

The bunker extends over three levels. The ground floor (1st level) comprises the largest shelter in which about 20 people can stay. The second level can be used as an additional shelter and also serves as an emergency exit. This also provides a good elevated view over the area. The third level (open space) does not function as a bunker, but can be used as an observation platform for non hazardous tests.

The bunker is equipped with sufficiently large observation windows made of bullet-proof glass. If required, they can additionally be covered with steel plates. Observation slits in the steel plates enable viewing of the tests.

The measuring and data processing equipment is in the bunker during the tests. Suitable culverts are available for measurement cables. The different levels can also be used to install cameras or microphones to record the tests.
