10-l model tank
The 10-l model tank tests are performed to check the pressure relief device on containers for transporting organic peroxides and self-decomposing materials.
Organic peroxides are needed as initial products for chemical processes. They are transported in intermediate bulk containers (IBC) and portable tanks. These containers must possess suitably designed pressure relief devices in order to prevent a dangerous build-up of pressure and thus bursting of the containers in the case of an external fire or accelerating decomposition of peroxide.
Concrete tub
The model tank consists of a high-grade steel test container of 10 litres volume. The response pressure of the pressure relief device and the ratio of its area to the container volume correspond to the conditions in the actual transport container. The pressure relief surface and the heating rate can be varied. To avoid contaminating the environment with decomposition products in the case of an unexpectedly violent reaction, the test facility is placed in a high-grade steel-lined concrete tub. The concrete tub is built in such a way that any escaping liquid can be trapped and disposed of if necessary.
BAM is the competent authority for the approval of intermediate bulk containers (IBC) and portable tanks for transporting liquid organic peroxides and self-decomposing materials.
The substance is heated in the model tank at a specified heating rate and the pressure and temperature are recorded as functions of time. Decomposition products leaking during the tests are collected in a high-grade steel container.
