BAM is denominated by the German Federal Government as a notified body towards the European Commission (EU notification no. 0589).
The technical competence of many divisions within BAM is regularly assessed and attested by third parties.

When a testing and/or calibration laboratory is holding an accreditation against ISO/IEC 17025:2005 it implies that its management system also fulfills the principles of ISO 9001:2008.
In accordance with Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt BAM fulfills duties of a national metrology institute.
