Test specimen

Wall made from historic masonry

"Obelix" is the internal name of a large masonry specimen, which has been built at BAM, using traditional historic construction methods and materials.

Several regionally typical materials like bricks (manufactured at the brick kiln in Glindow), sandstone, granite, limestone and bog iron stone have been used for the construction of the specimen.
The mortar (hydraulic chalk mortar) was advisedly selected considering the recommendations from experts.

"Obelix" is separated into 3 parts, which vary in thickness (0,8m to 1,5m) and structure (one-leafed or multi-leafed masonry). The measures of the specimen are 7,0m by 3,0m (LxH). The specimen comprises a multitude of testing problems, like voids, irregularities (inclusions of wood, metal, mounting parts), fragmented sandstone and others.

The specimen has been built in the course of the project ONSITEFORMASONRY as a reference specimen for historic masonry buildings. With its

it can be regarded as a "link" between the "common" masonry specimen and the real historic building.
