High rate testing equipment

The servohydraulic high rate testing system is qualified for high speed loading of tensile or shear specimens of different shapes.

The range is

Loading up to 100 kN and 10⁵ kN/s; depending on material
Strain rates up to 1000 1/s (i.e. 100,000 %/s); depending on specimen shape
Test temperatures between –80 °C and +250 °C for any materials (-80 °C and +1200 °C for metals)

Components of the high rate testing system are:

Clampings with integrated load measurement for cylindrical and flat high-speed tensile specimen

Clampings for high-speed tensile tests (left: cylindrical specimen, right: flat specimen)

Tensile specimen with resistance heating

Tempering of specimen between -80 °C and +250 °C by a heating and cooling chamber

Heating and cooling chamber with specimen

Deformation field and damage measurement by a high speed camera (up to 1 million frames per second) and a deformation analysis software system

Ultra-high speed camera HPV-1 with adapted lenses

Deformation measurement by a high speed laser extensometer for gage lengths between 5 mm and 100 mm and specimen velocities up to 100 m/s

High speed laser extensometer with flat specimen

Registration of specimen heat up from room temperature up to ca. 1000 °C by a high speed infrared sensor array
