Fields of competence

Our field of competence includes the characterization of the mechanical behaviour of ceramic matrix composites, metallic matrix composites and advanced ceramic materials especially during thermo-mechanical loading. Characteristic material values are determined using standardised testing methods (Attestations of competence according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025) with the main investigation of damage mechanisms taking centre stage. For new materials and material applications, new testing methods are being developed and common testing methods are being improved.

• Thermo mechanical testing of ceramic matrix composites and advanced ceramic materials at temperatures up to 2200 K
• Characterization of the mechanical behaviour of monolithic ceramic, functional ceramic and porous ceramic
• Development of new techniques for mechanical testing of materials
• Cooperation in the development of technical rules and standards (DIN NMP 291, CEN/TC 184)

Testing methods and testing equipment

• Tensile test at room temperature and at elevated temperatures up to 2200 K (Flyer, .pdf)

• Determination of Young's modulus and Shear modulus using the resonance method at temperatures up to 2200 K (Flyer, .pdf)
• Determination of fracture toughness with single-edge V-notch beam method (SEVNB-method)
