European subterranean termites (Reticulitermes spec.) stained with the dye Nile blue in order to identify individuals from different colonies during foraging.
Materials are required to perform reliably and safely even when exposed to adverse conditions such as weather and biological degradation. Right at the interface between materials and environment is the main focus of our research activities. We identify the efficacy of protective agents (preservatives), analyze the emission of biocides into water and soil, and investigate the performance of materials when under attack of insects and microorganisms. We are especially interested in how insects, bacteria, and fungi interact with materials and surfaces made of wood, plastics, and textiles, respectively, and how microorganisms contaminate and degrade paints and lubricants. Microorganisms involved in materials deterioration can be identified and characterized by us applying conventional and molecular microbiological techniques. Also, we evaluate the protective effect of biocides on materials and we are currently developing and optimizing procedures for the testing of biocides. Furthermore, we cultivate reference organisms, which are provided to our customers via the BAM-Webshop. Microorganisms and insects, which we offer as reference organisms, can be used for standard test procedures or for research in the field of materials deterioration.
Our research in the field of microbiology, biochemistry, and entomolgy focuses on the improvement of measures concerning materials protection and environmental conservation.
A large number of our procedures are accredited.
