The division in engaged in ensuring and improving levels of safety protection of containments for the transport of radioactive materials.

BAM is the German competent authority for the approval of special form radioactive materials. Within the approval procedure of packages for transportation of radioactive materials the division is the responsible German government institute for mechanical and thermal safety assessment and quality assurance issues. Safety related scientific research is concentrated on the development of assessment methods for the containment performance under operation conditions and under accidental impacts. For research and testing unique facilities for drop, fire and leakage testing as well as hard- and software for finite element calculations are provided.
