Working group
Pyrotechnics is one of BAM’s key fields of activity since BAM is the responsible body for EC type examinations of pyrotechnical items. The Pyrotechnics working group fulfils functions which have been assigned to BAM by the legislator. For pyrotechnics, these are established in the Explosives Act (SprengG), Weapons Act (BeschG) and in the regulations for the transportation of dangerous goods.
BAM examines pyrotechnical items, pyrotechnical assemblies and pyrotechnical ammunition on their proper functioning, provided they are used in a way which corresponds to their objective, in approval or conformity assessment procedures. The items are also exposed to thermal and mechanical loads. Handling must remain safe after these loads and the intended function of these items must be guaranteed without restrictions.
In addition, the working group provides expert reports and advises politics and industry on behalf of BAM. The staff collaborate in standardization committees and carry out manufacturer’s audits.
The approval and conformity assessment procedure involves the testing of correct and safe functioning with respect to the purpose of the article. Correct functioning is again tested after the articles have been exposed to thermal and mechanical conditioning.
The classification of pyrotechnics according to the regulations for transport of dangerous goods often requires the bonfire test. The behaviour of the articles in the bonfire is analysed and leads to the assignment to a hazard division.
