Safety Related Properties of Gases

Testing and evaluation of safety related properties of gases and gas mixtures

Safety characteristics of gases and gas mixtures are investigated by standard methods as well as under process conditions in order to provide information for the explosion protection of technical plants. For this purpose, process conditions are often simulated by model tests.

Among others, the following tests are carried out:

• Determination of explosion limits according to DIN EN 1839 in an open tube and in an explosion bomb
• Determination of the flammability and explosion limits at elevated initial conditions in a closed vessel
  (initial pressure up to 300 bar, initial test temperature up to 500 °C)
• Determination of explosion characteristics for constructive safety measures (explosion pressure (p_ex), rate of explosion pressure rise (dp/dt)_ex, K_G values)
• Determination of limiting oxygen concentrations (LOC) with different inert gases
• Determination of auto ignition temperatures according to DIN EN 14522 and at elevated initial pressures
• Influence of ignition sources on safety-relevant characteristics
• Determination of limiting stability conditions (p, T, I_E) for chemically unstable gases.
