Division 2.1

Gases, Gas Plants

Ammonia flame

Determination of explosion limits of ammonia according to DIN EN 1839 (nlarged picture)

Our main activity is dealing with all safety-related questions in respect of flammable and chemically unstable gases, as well as oxygen and other oxidizing gases. This comprises e.g. measurement of the safety-related properties of gases and gas mixtures, evaluation of the suitability of porous masses for acetylene cylinders and of materials for oxygen components. The division examines safety devices for gas plants such as gas detectors, flame arrestors, multifunctional devices and fittings for gas receptacles with regard to compliance with European Directives and standards and German national legislation. In addition to single safety devices safety relevant parts of gas plants are also evaluated, e.g. for acetylene or other chemically reactive gases. Safety related research projects on the field of explosion protection and quantitative risk analysis completed the line of action. Well equipped laboratories and an outdoor test facility for large scale experiments are available.
