Safety in chemistry and materials technologies
Issue no. 5 of 10. November 2009
The 12th Dangerous Goods Panel 2009 with the key topic "Research and development technology trends in packaging and ICB" took place from 12 to 13 November 2009 in BAM.
The Berlin Dangerous Goods Technology Panels have been organised by BAM and the Storck Academy Hamburg for twelve years. The issue of packaged dangerous goods is the key topic in every alternate year. The panel appeals to packaging manufacturers and truck and container stackers, the chemical industry and chemical trade, operators and cleaning firms, logistic and transport companies, authorities and security forces, associations and organisations, experts and analysts, but most of all to dangerous goods representatives and accountable responsible persons.
The panel was accompanied by appropriate dangerous goods packaging tests. On the 13th November 2009 fire tests on steel barrels, aerosol cans with spray cream and firework items were displayed at the BAM Test Facility Technical Safety in Horstwalde.

On 1 October 2009 the fourth law for the amendment of the Explosives Act came into force. § 44 clarifies the legal status and § 45 the responsibilities of BAM.
§ 45 BAM’s responsibilities
BAM is responsible for
What is new?
BAM’s general responsibility is now focused on the continuous development of safety in engineering and chemical technology – this coincides with BAM’s mission and performing research and development was explicitly mentioned. Thus this version better characterizes BAM’s responsibilities and status as a departmental research institute than the previous one.
Item 3 was added which refers to knowledge and technology transfer. This responsibility has been assumed by BAM for a long time, but it is now confirmed by being stated in law. Item 2, already present, remained unchanged in the text and Item 4, deals as before, with BAM’s explicit tasks in the field of explosives law.

Fire test for dummies on 09.09.09
09.09.09 was the day when BAM opened the Test Site Technical Safety in Horstwalde/Baruth. The weather was beautiful and thousands of visitors came and learnt about fire and explosion tests. Test devices were presented and widely admired. BAM’s partners also presented their work.
Here are a few impressions of the day (only in German).
