365 places in the country of ideas and we are part of it

Logo – Germany – the country of ideas

BAM with its Test Site Technical Safety has been selected as a place in the country of ideas. 09. 09. 09 – this will be the day for BAM in the country of ideas. On this day we will open the BAM Test Site Technical Safety at Horstwalde/Baruth near Berlin to our visitors.

The test site is about 50 km south of Berlin and has a surface area of approx. 12 km2. It offers unique possibilities in Europe for investigating the most difficult and dangerous materials, their packaging, and for testing safety devices. The dangerous characteristics of materials can be investigated to a certain extent in the laboratories on BAM’s sites in Berlin. However, these safety parameters alone are not always satisfactory to characterise the behaviour of dangerous materials in their packaging reliably and/or in large quantities. Therefore dangerous materials must also be tested at their actual size so that they can be transported, stored or handled safely.

09. 09. 09: This is our day in which we want to celebrate with as many visitors as possible on our Test Site Technical Safety. We will demonstrate different fire and explosion tests, explain experimental devices and present further ideas about test possibilities. Please accompany us virtually up to the day. So that you can do this, we have established a new website Die BAM im Land der Ideen (BAM in the country of the ideas). On this website we will inform you about tests, events and the historical and technical development of this Test Site. We will introduce a few people who have contributed their ideas to safety in our technical world.

The places in the country of ideas are not geographical or political places: these are ideas which have been selected for the series event “365 places”. "A selected place in a country of ideas is anywhere where future-oriented ideas are being developed, promoted and actively implemented" – says the organiser. Every day a different company, research institute, an artistic or a cultural facility, a school, university, a social facility or an initiative will present itself. Every day a place in Germany is in the centre and presents its idea in form of an event for the public to experience it.

Explosions from artistic and scientific view

Blown-up copper plate

In the Once upon a Fraction of Time and other Stories exhibition the Brandenburg Art Association (Brandenburgischer Kunstverein e. V.), Potsdam, presents artefacts from explosions by Aoife Van Linden Tol. The objects can be seen from 14 February to 22 March 2009.

The exhibition is part of the Art + Science: Model and Imagination project of Gerrit Gohlke and this time will be managed by Karl Heinz Jeron. With a series of individual exhibitions, the Brandenburg Art Association regularly invites scientists and artists to join in a dialogue. BAM sees in this artistic commitment as way of connecting science with art and providing the scientific contribution to the exhibition.

It is explosions that connect art and science in this exhibition. BAM’s scientists have investigated explosions within a 50-liter spherical autoclave. This autoclave, unique in Europe, is used for studying reactions of gases under high pressure. The four-ton-heavy autoclave is designed for a maximum pressure of up to 1100 bar.

In a test series the explosion behaviour of liquid toluene and pure oxygen was determined. Copper sample plates with a diameter of 40 cm were filled with about 380 ml toluene. Subsequently, the autoclave was filled with pure oxygen. Within the test series the oxygen pressure was varied between 8.5 bar and 21 bar oxygen pressure, and detonations were performed which can be characterised by extremely fast reactions connected with a huge pressure increase.

The detonations substantially deformed the plates and oyster-shaped forms of fascinating beauty were produced. Several plates of this kind and an unused plate have been exhibited.

Aoife Van Linden Tol plans to produce more artistic explosions on the BAM Test Site Technical Safety in June 2009. BAM has already supported her in an art project in 2007 by providing the explosion test stand and ensuring safe conditions.

The artist Aoife Van Linden Tol comes from London. She studied arts at the Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design and it was after her studies that she started to artistically deform objects by explosions.

Rheology Seminar 2009

Logo of the Rheological Society

The Rheology Seminar 2009, jointly organized by BAM, the German Rheological Society (DRG) and the ProcessNet Committee Rheology, will take place in BAM on 19 and 20 March 2009.

The seminar should provide an opportunity for younger scientists in particular to present their work and partake in a discussion with specialists. One of the key topics of this seminar will be viscoelastic flow instability.

Workshop Geothermic Facilities – Hydrogeochemical Criteria of Operational Safety

geoHyBe-Logo

The Workshop will take place in BAM in Berlin on 23 and 24 March 2009 and will be under the patronage of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). The organizers are:

The Workshop will deal with the specific provisions for components in contact with thermal water within geothermal facilities and identifying the resulting risks for the total system. How research projects and innovative industrial solutions determine the future, development potential and visions, but limitations of the technology will also be discussed. An accompanying exhibition will be devoted to specialist topics and encourage an interdisciplinary exchange of experience.

This Workshop will provide an opportunity for the participants to discuss issues around the sustainable use of geothermal resources.

1. RAM Container Safety Seminar 2009

Drop test facility

BAM, together with the editors of Gefahr/gut (Dangerous/goods) of Springer Transport Media GmbH, will organize the 1st RAM Container Safety Seminar 2009 (RAM radioactive materials) on 26 and 27 March 2009 the. Divisions III.3 Safety of Transport Containers and III.4 Safety of Storage Containers of BAM, supported by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) as a transport-legal admission authority, provide an insight into those safety engineering test methods and evaluation criteria in design test, investigation and approval of transport, intermediate and final storage containers for radioactive materials.

On the first day, nine lectures will deal with test and investigation methods, features and experiences of analytical, experimental and numerical verification including their combinations in the various permission and approval procedures based on the atomic law and dangerous goods regulations. The unique drop and fire test equipment on the BAM Test Site Technical Safety will be presented on the second day.

The seminar offers manufacturers and users of containers, representatives of Federal and State supervision and authorizing bodies as well as test and expert organizations the opportunity at first hand to get information about these conditions and enrich existing knowledge and discuss current questions.

There are already more than 100 registrations, this is why the series event of lectures on 26 March has been moved to BAM’s Ludwig Erhard Hall, Unter den Eichen 87, 12205 Berlin. In view of the great interest, the event will be continued annually from now on changing the topics for each year.
